Am I a composer who writes about early music, or a musicologist who composes?

As François Rabelais puts it,

"ne l’un ne l’autre, et tous les deux ensemble".

("neither one nor the other, and both at once".)

As composer I draw on a wide range of ideas and inspirations, including the challenges and delights of early Renaissance culture. As musicologist, I believe passionately that these early repertories can help us to think about the role of art in contemporary culture. For me, the two are intrinsically linked.
